Because dated visuals and stupid story aside, this is basically just more Gothic 3, which is still my favorite fantasy rpg of all time besides the other two Gothic games and Diablo 2. Surprisingly, my gripes with this game end at this point. so yeah, the character development is highly illogical and totally ass. Not only the main story is utter bs, but so are some of the quests and dialogue, which sometimes turn our nameless hero from the likable and consistent character he was in the first three games into a downright cruel, stonecold hitman for hire at certain points. This leads us to the biggest point of criticism: The story of Forsaken Gods is so clumsy and stupid that it’s no wonder this AddOn is widely ignored by the Gothic fan community even though it is an official, canonical sort of epilogue to the classic Gothic trilogy:Īfter our nameless hero became an unstoppable, ancient demons and undead dragons-slaying badass again for the third time, Forsaken Gods uses yet another extremely contrived, dumb and lazy excuse to send him back to Myrtana as a totally weak noob almost unable to defeat a single bloodfly, who is now tasked with putting an end to a totally pointless, random civil war between his old comrades Gorn and Thorus.
Myrtana should be striving again after the events of Gothic 3, but instead, it feels somewhat muted and strangely lifeless at certain points.
In addition, some settlements like Okara or Reddock which were densely populated in the main game, are now just vast empty caves devoid of any life, except for a handful of hostile creatures. The AddOn takes place exclusively in middle Myrtana with the icy mountains of the north and the deserts of Varant in the south closed off.

it‘s the general feel of the world that is a bit off here: even though the reign of the Orcs prevalent in the main game has been overthrown (so Myrtana is basically a free kingdom again), it feels a lot more desolate than main Gothic 3.
It’s no surprise that the grafics and animations are very dated and the game runs a bit „choppy“ at times, but on the other hand, the game world is still so atmospheric and rich in detail that the dusty visuals hardly matter. Technically the AddOn is one big recycled asset with basically the exact same strengths and weaknesses as Gothic 3: Still one of the most atmospheric and detailed worlds in any RPG to date and one of the greatest OSTs ever composed for a videogame, yet the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥ combat and at times unpolished and slightly buggy mechanics. To get this quickly out of the way: Just like the main game this thing came a long way in terms of playability and bugfixing, but thanks to the awesome community patches it is perfectly playable today, so you shouldn’t judge it on this particular aspect from a distant past. but it has been close to half a decade now since i last played the Gothic games and so i decided that it is time to finally revisit Myrtana once again with Forsaken Gods. Just like the main game, Forsaken Gods is much better than it’s reputation.Īs a huge gothic fan, i postponed playing this addon for years and years, mostly because of its bad reputation.
